27Feb92 UK: OVERHAUL OF THE ASSOCIATION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERS TO BE CONSIDERED BY SPECIAL MEMBERS MEETING.
27 February 1992
A radical and far-reaching overhaul of the Association of Consulting Engineers will be considered by a special meeting of members next month.Details of the proposals were first revealed by ACE chairman Peter Campbell at last week's annual dinner of the association in London. The most controversial proposal would change the basis of ACE's membership from individuals to firms - enabling it to operate as a conventional trade association , which it hopes will increase its influence.Mr Campbell said: 'A comprehensive study has been carried out that has inexorably led us to the conclusion that the existing structure of the association is a hybrid, neither a strictly professional body of individuals nor a trade association of firms.'The membership will next month be given the opportunity to debate in detail council's proposals that membership of the association is changed to one of professional consulting engineering firms.'The meeting is expected to take place on March 19 at the association's London headquarters.Precise details of the changes have not yet been worked out.'The concept will involve all engineering principals and associates in those member firms in the association's activities, rather than the individual members as at present,' Mr Campbell explained.'We feel that the present activities of the association and its promotion to the outside world will be enhanced and enriched by this new arrangement.'He hoped the changes - if accepted - would bring more members into ACE. Officials said that structural, mechanical and electrical and building services engineering firms would be the likely targets along with the growing number of multidisciplinary practices.- This year's winner of the Young Consulting Engineer Award is civil engineer Richard Cox, 30, of Mott MacDonald. He will soon begin to design on cut and cover tunnels on the vast Boston Central Artery project in the USA.
