BOVIS Lend Lease is being lined up to build one of the City of London's biggest and most futuristic construction projects.
The firm is set to pick up the £200 million construction management contract for the One New Change mixeduse development, designed by French architect Jean Nouveal.
The building, in the shadow of St Paul's Cathedral, will be the Paris-based architect's first job in the UK.
The developer, Land Securities, was granted planning permission for the scheme by the Corporation of London in January.
Land Securities has worked with Bovis Lend Lease on several projects, including BBC Broadcasting House in London and Norwich Union's head off ice in Norwich.
A source close to the deal said: 'There are only a couple of contractors in the country that could do a project like this and one of those is Bovis.
'Land Securities is negotiating the deal with them and as long as the two don't fall out between now and the start of the job then Bovis will win it.
'The work should start around September, beginning with demolition of the building currently on the site. It hasn't been all plain sailing as there had been some objections to planning consent. But the only hurdle left, and it shouldn't become a problem, is negotiating the section 106 agreement.' The development has received criticism for being unsuitable for the St Paul's vicinity but the planning committee voted nine to four in favour of consent. The majority of complaints were due to the building's perceived bulkiness and glass covering.
It will be one of the biggest shopping centres in central London, providing 20,500 sq m of retail space across three floors. But the majority of the development will be taken up by around 32,000 sq m of office space.
