Training Excellence: Winner

Winner: M J Rooney Construction

From an outstanding shortlist, M J Rooney edged to victory through its commitment to training in every aspect of the business.

For a company of this scale, it was an example for many firms of how to grow a small business while continuing to invest heavily in staff improvement.

The commitment of two weeks of training per employee across the year was higher than any other finalist, and reflected just how important this is to the company.

It is clear this comes from the top down, with all of M J Rooney’s management working together to push higher standards while also driving initiatives that benefit people inside and outside the business.

The company presented a number great examples of people on its operational side who were benefiting from the training infrastructure it had in place.

Staff retention at the firm is strong, despite the sector being typified by a transient workforce, illustrating that staff believe they can develop in this business.

Judges’ comment

The firm’s dedication to innovation was similarly clear, with the judges praising its level of investment in this area. M J Rooney uses digital tools and virtual reality platforms to give operatives experience of dangerous and highly technical environments, boosting both the safety and speed of work being carried out.

The fact the company has not suffered any major incidents in recent years despite a relatively high-risk sector is testament to how well prepared its operatives are when delivering schemes.

M J Rooney’s drive for workforce improvement does not just stop at the technical side though; it also extends to staff wellbeing.

The drive to put many of its employees through mental health training drew praise, the judges adding that this would help address a major industry challenge.

What makes M J Rooney stand out is its willingness to share best practice with the rest of the sector and train not just its own workforce but those outside the firm. The creation of its own handbook and free app for use by anybody in the sector showed an exceptional attitude to skills.

Underpinning this was an outstanding presentation which perfectly illustrated that M J Rooney is passionate about improving its staff – and its sector.
