Health & Safety Initiative of the Year: Winner

Winner: Clugston Construction - ‘5-a-Day’ Health Initiative

Amid a competitive group of nominations and with some exceptionally innovative and effective initiatives, it was Clugston Construction and its 5-a-Day Health Initiative that won the close battle for the Health & Safety Initiative prize.

With high marks amassed across the board, the judges felt that Clugston, through a series of successful measures, had fully earned the victory thanks to its clear engagement across all levels of the company.

This comprehensive commitment at every stage of the initiative was particularly highlighted by the presence of site manager James Johnson at the presentation.

The company’s initiative expanded its focus to the supply chain as well, ensuring all workers knew the rules and what was expected of them to keep everyone safe and prevent occupational disease and hazards.

This includes basic medical overviews with checks and analysis on aspects including eyesight, blood pressure, BMI, lung function and a number of other issues.

The 5-a-Day risk assessment covers noise, dermatitis, musculoskeletal issues, respiratory measures and HAVS (hand/arm vibration).

In line with these, further plans and awareness meetings were undertaken to prepare the safest system possible for those involved.

Judges’ comment

Exceptional safety results saw a 67 per cent reduction in all injuries from 2003 to 2014, and only three RIDDOR incidents in 2014.

Clugston displayed competency and passion in turning an ambition into serious intent to bring about change and establish a working environment where employee wellbeing was at the front line.

With any focus on health instrumental to the future success of Clugston, the company’s commitment to health and safety isn’t just shown in its 5-a-Day initiative, but also in past systems implemented down the years, alongside outside engagement, which has manifested itself in the form of safety days.

As well as safety days, Clugston’s project toolbox talks were attended by 36,187 workers in 2014, more than double the 17,342 in 2013. Furthermore, 350 health and safety training courses were held in the same year.

Commenting on the initiative, judges praised the firm’s engagement with the supply chain as well as the practical perspective, which included workers having “bravery in challenging what they are asked to do”.

Of the presentation, the judges were full of admiration for the “balanced approach” adopted by Clugston as well as the “clear strategy, demonstrating passion and enthusiasm”.

Highly Commended: Lanes Utilities – Digital Point of Works risk assessment

Lanes Utilities was highly commended by the judges for its digitally engaged initiative.

The judges noted how the firm used “methodologies people are attracted to” and that the initiative could be clearly embedded into the culture of the workplace and developed alongside the workforce.

Citing specific improvements, the judges admired the way Lanes Utilities was committed to sharing the initiative across the industry.

Highly Commended: Highway Traffic Management – Low-level traffic management installation vehicle

The judges also awarded a high commendation to HTM for its abilities to push boundaries and the “David vs Goliath” narrative that came to mind with the company’s successful implementation of their initiative.

The firm identified a risk to workers when accessing vehicles and upgraded its fleet with lower-height work platforms that cut the height at which users could step onto them.

With the subsequent reduction in incidents, HTM was praised for showing how “simple solutions are the best”.
