Balfour Beatty wins £16m Birmingham station contract

Balfour Beatty has been chosen to carry out a £16 million refurbishment of 10 Birmingham New Street station platforms.

The contractor will refurbish and reconstruct the platforms at the 50-year-old station under the £600m Birmingham Gateway project.

Balfour BeattyRegional Civil Engineering will carry out the work in partnership with subsidiary Birse Rail with work set to commence this month anc be completed in September 2013.

This is the second contract to be awarded to Balfour Beatty on the Gateway project, the first being the Moor Street Link scheme which involves the design and construction of an elevated walkway to provide a new pedestrian route between Birmingham New Street and Moor Street
stations.

The Birmingham Gateway project is backed by Birmingham City Council, Department for Transport, Network Rail, Advantage West Midlands and Centro and is being carried out by Network Rail and delivery partner Mace.
