Berkeley buys News International’s ‘Fortress Wapping’ for £150m

The Berkeley Group has bought the former home of Murdoch newspapers The Sun and The Times for £150 million.

In a statement to the Stock Exchange, Tony Pidgley’s development firm said it was “delighted” to announce that its subsidiary, St George, has acquired Wapping Village from News International.

St George specialises in high quality regeneration in London, combining new homes, apartments and penthouses with retail and leisure amenities for residents.

It said the agreed amount is payable in instalments.

The statement said: “The purchase is not conditional on planning. St George will now consult with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the local community to prepare a mixed use planning application for the 15 acre site. “

Berkeley was revealed as the front runner for the site earlier this month.
