Defence Estates’ modernisation of Britain’s military portfolio has been considerable in the last decade and investment is likely to be a big part of the general election campaigning. Vice-Admiral Laurence assumed the lead role two years ago, overseeing the record-breaking £959 million sale of Chelsea Barracks. His department went on to face criticism over soldier accommodation, and in June he secured £50m from the Treasury for improvements.
