Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of construction workers want better physical and mental wellbeing support from their employers, new research has revealed.
The survey, shared exclusively with Construction News, also revealed that more than a third (35 per cent) of industry workers believed their company could do more to support employees’ physical and mental wellbeing.
Westfield Health, a not-for profit organisation that provides health and wellbeing services, surveyed 2,025 UK employees – 250 of which were construction workers – on health and wellbeing in the workplace.
Of the construction respondents, 32 per cent said that the wider industry needed to provide more support for physical and mental wellbeing.
More than half (52 per cent) thought the government needed to do more to support the wellbeing of construction’s workforce.
Nearly two-thirds (64 per cent) of industry workers said they would use wellbeing services if their employer provided them.
The services they would most like to be offered were exercise (42 per cent), health check-ups (35 per cent) and dental work (34 per cent).
Westfield Health commercial director David Capper said: “From sleep to nutrition and mental health to physical fitness, there are so many elements that contribute to your overall wellness, happiness and healthiness.
“In particular, mental health conditions are a major issue in the construction industry, leaving workers there in body, but not in mind.
“When workers’ minds aren’t completely on the job it can potentially lead to costly mistakes and accidents.”
Last year CN revealed that one in four construction workers had considered suicide as part of an industry-wide survey into the mental health of its workforce.
