More than 60 trade bodies back retentions bill

More than 60 trade bodies are now behind the parliamentary bill to bring an end to retentions in the construction industry.

Conservative MPPeter Aldous put forward a 10-minute rule bill designed to outlaw retentions at the start of 2018.

Ahead of the second reading of the so-called ‘Aldous bill’, which takes place on 27 April, the number of trade bodies supporting the proposal has increased to more than 60 and now includes the Federation of Master Builders and the Federation of Small Businesses.

Peter Aldous MP said following the Carillion inquiry there was a need for reform of the retentions system: “This coalition of support shows the urgent need for reform and unity of industry following Carillion. Support covers so much of the industry that we now have a golden opportunity to change construction for the better.

“I hope government gets behind industry and this Bill. We need action to protect SMEs before more millions are lost, and this Bill is about ensuring people’s money is safe so businesses can grow and invest in their future.”
