Construction firm Costain and the National Construction College (NCC) have unveiled a new training scheme designed to ensure high-quality workmanship across the industry.
The two-year programme will see a number of short training courses given to people of all levels of experience within the building trade, including graduate trainees, site managers, supervisors and site engineers.
The courses seek to improve levels of technical knowledge of Costain employees, and of those working throughout the supply chain.
Costain said the programme would also allow participants to gain a better understanding of the physical, logistical and workplace environment, as it seeks to update people on the changing nature of the construction industry.
It added that ensuring quality workmanship is key to the company’s success, and to the construction industry as a whole, and that it was keen for the NCC to assist it in providing training opportunities.
Bill Hewlett, Technical Director at Costain, said: “Due to the changing nature of contracting there are less people coming up through the trades. We know that in time this may result in a loss of integral knowledge flowing through to supervisory and management staff.
“Great managers with a thorough skills background have been a hallmark of the Costain offering. We want to retain this so we are acting now to keep ahead.”
Neil England, Commercial Manager at the NCC, added: “This is a good example of how construction organisations can benefit from the expertise and facilities which are unique to the National Construction College. This bespoke service is one which we want to develop with other organisations who wish to ‘train out’ costly gaps in knowledge.”
