Foreign construction professionals face UK jobs ban

The right for quantity surveyors and construction managers from outside to the EU to work in the UK looks set to end, MPs have been told.

Migration Advisory Committee head, professor David Metcalf said the recession had changed the needs of the construction industry and told MPs to expect an announcement on these roles later in the month.

The Migration Advisory Committee decides which occupations are deemed to have a “shortage” and require recruitment from outside the EU.

Professor Metcalfe told the home affairs committee that he did not want to say more before the shortage list was published at the end of the month, but admitted construction managers and quantity surveyors were being looked at.

Professionals from within the EU retain the right to work in the UK.
