Costain recently got a silver banding in Business in the Community’s 2008 Corporate Responsibility Index, with a score of 88 per cent, up from 62 per cent in 2006.

It aims to employ 70 local people through the Church Village Bypass Project in Wales, a crime reduction initiative devised by the Home Office in conjunction with the Welsh National Assembly.

Costain’s ‘Save It’ waste management campaign was launched in 2005 to eliminate waste to landfill and increase recycling of building materials. The recent Manchester Airport Framework project re-uses excavated concrete on site and around 20,000 tonnes of recovered concrete was processed and incorporated into the construction of new taxiways. The company expects a further 24,000 tonnes of aggregate to be generated this year.
