Family firm Wates was founded in 1897 and the fourth generation now runs the company. Employees enjoy health care, child care vouchers, retail discounts and a £250 contribution towards flexible benefits. It also offers 26 days leave a year. Each year the firm asks staff to help identify areas where working life could be improved. An independent Ipsos Mori poll found that 94 per cent of employees are committed to the business and prepared to go the extra mile.
