Bridge for bypass

VHE has installed a 110 tonne rail bridge as part of the construction of the £15m Cudworth and West Green Bypass for Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.

The 22 m long bridge was lifted into position by an 800 tonne Demag AC700 crane. VHE and specialist rail subcontractors CML took just 30 minutes to install the single span bridge deck, which was fabricated by Lanarkshire Welding.

The £21.2m bypass will reduce the amount of traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, using the A628 through Cudworth, and improve access to local employment sites.

As well as being the main contractor for the scheme, VHE – a specialist engineering arm of Renew – is responsible for the design of the drainage, structures and surfacing.
