Blackpool FC digs deep

Aarsleff has won a contract to install over 271 precast concrete piles as foundation support for the new 3,500 seat covered grandstand for Blackpool Football Club.

The 250mm and 300mm square section piles are installed on a grid pattern and in a variety. The piles which range range from 14m to 21m long have to accommodate compressive working loads of 350kN to 650kN.

Aarsleff is using a pair of its own Banut 700 self erecting rigs with 5t drop hammers to drive the piles through soft clay and gravels. A separate ground works contractor will follow on cutting the piles to length and tie in the reinforcement to pile caps and a 200mm thick reinforced concrete slab. Steelwork erection will then follow prior to completion of the £6 million stand in time for the start of the next football season in August.
