Blackpool tenders £20m seafront improvements job

Contractors are being invited to bid for a two-lot contract worth up to £20 million for Blackpool Council to upgrade the town’s seafront.

The first lot covers improvement to the Tower Festival Headland, adjacent to Blackpool Tower.

The project will create an outdoor event space with capacity to hold up to 20,000 spectators, whilst also providing a promenade area.

Work will include hard and soft landscaping works, construction of a reinforced concrete structure to house a new sub-station, wc units and store room, and installation of a demountable wind break structure, lighting, furniture, and signage as well as demolition of a pedestrian stairwell and walkway.

The second lot, which is subject to funding approval, covers the installation of the upper part of a 10m high pre-cast concrete seawall along a 350m stretch.

The lower half of the pre-cast wall will already have been constructed before commencement of these works, which means construction will not be affected by tides.

A maximum of five contractors will be invited to tender following the submission of pre-qualification questionnaires by 5 October.
