Boxing clever

A key section of a new £2.6 million bridge, named after unbeaten world boxing champion Joe Calzaghe, has been lifted into place in Newbridge, South Wales.

The Pont Calzaghe Bridge will provide links for pedestrians and cyclists between the town centre, the new Ebbw Valley railway station and Newbridge Comprehensive School.

The bridge was designed and project managed by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s joint venture partner Capita Symonds, and erected by Rowecord.

It comprises two connected footway/cycleway bridges – one spanning the Ebbw Valley Railway and the other the River Ebbw.

Structural elements of the scheme are due to be completed by the end of June, with the bridge scheduled for opening in September.
