Transport for London has put up £30 million for Crossrail to pay for public space outside its train stations.
Crossrail will spend a total of £90m on the project, which it says will create public space equivalent to 13 football pitches outside its new stations in central London and Docklands, as well as existing stations on its route.
As well as the £30m from TfL a further £28m has been put aside from the company’s budget, while developers and local councils will be expected to make up the £32m shortfall.
The initiatives range from widened pavements and public squares to traffic calming measures and better links with the wider transport network.
Crossrail is working with architecture firms including John McAslan, BDP, Gillespies, Urban Movement, Burns+Nice and Atkins, as well as the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, now part of the Design Council.
Explaining Tfl’s contribution, London’s transport commissioner, Peter Hendy, said: “It’s vital that Crossrail acts as a catalyst for improving the public space in the areas it will serve, which is why TfL has committed £30 million towards the £90 million needed to support public realm regeneration and improve local transport access at locations along the route.”
Design work has already been completed for 16 stations, with master plans for another 12 stations to be completed by the end of 2013.
“The success of the project and individual stations will depend on how they relate to the streets and spaces around them,” said John Mathers, chief executive of the Design Council.
“Over and above the practical functions of the interchanges, Crossrail have realised the potential for public spaces to lift the spirits of station users, create a positive impression for visitors to the city and build new spaces for people to enjoy and use.”
