HS2: Who's who on the mega-project?

An overview of who’s delivering phase one of HS2 from London to Birmingham.

Jim Crawford, managing director for construction 

Mr Crawford joined HS2 as managing director for phase one of the project in May 2014. He was previously lead director on Network Rail’s £6.5bn Thameslink upgrade and oversaw the rebuilding of London Blackfriars and Farringdon stations.

Before Network Rail, Mr Crawford was a quantity surveyor for Railtrack and Turner & Townsend. He is also a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Rob Carr, programme director (Area South)

Mr Carr will lead delivery of the HS2 link between London and Birmingham, specifically the civils construction for the Euston and Old Oak Common stations.

He was previously Network Rail’s head of project and commercial services for the Thameslink programme.

Colin Thomas, project director (Area South 1)

Mr Thomas is responsible for the delivery of the Euston tunnels and approaches. He was previously a senior consultant at the Nichols Group from July 2002 to September 2015.

Rob McCrae, project director (Area South 2)

Mr McCrae is overseeing the delivery of the Northolt tunnels.

Peter Curson, project director (Area South 3)

Mr Curson is in charge of work on Euston station. He was previously Balfour Beatty Rail project director.

Matthew Botelle, project director (Area South 4)

Mr Botelle is responsible for the delivery of Old Oak Common station. He was previously a partner at CPC Project Services supporting the transport and infrastructure section of the business.

Mike Hickson, programme director (Area Central)

Mr Hickson’s responsibility covers the delivery of the 100 km central region area of the project. He was previously logistics director for engineering company Fluor.

Paul Brown, project director (Area Central 1)

Mr Brown is overseeing the delivery of the Chiltern tunnels and Colne Valley Viaduct line.

David Emms, project director (Central Area 2) 

Mr Emms’ remit covers the delivery of the line from North Portal Chiltern tunnels to Brackley.

Uma Shanker, project director (Central Area 3)

Mr Shanker is in charge of delivering the line from Brackley to Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel South Portal. He was previously Balfour Beatty chief operating officer from April 2014 to June 2015 and business development director for Network Rail from September 2013 to April 2014.

Mike Lyons, programme director (Area North)

Mr Lyons is responsible for the delivery of Birmingham Curzon Street station and the Interchange stations in the West Midlands. He was previously route delivery director at Network Rail from April 2012 to August 2014.

David Grant, project director (Area North 1)

Mr Grant is overseeing the delivery of the line between Long Itchington Wood Green Tunnel and Delta Junction / Birmingham Spur. He was previously divisional director at Highways England for major projects in the Midlands and the South-west of England.

Phil Millington, project director (Area North 2)

Mr Millington’s brief covers the delivery of the Delta Junction to West Coast Main Line tie-in. He was previously project director for Babcock International Group from June 2013 to October 2014, leading on the upgrade of the Doncaster-to-Peterborough railway line.

Andrew Duggins, project director (Area North 3)

Mr Duggins joined HS2 last year from Atkins, where he held a director’s role. He has previously worked for engineers Parsons Brinckerhoff and Hyder.

Giles Thomas, project engineering director

Mr Thomas has been with HS2 since 2014, holding roles as rail systems director and acting technical director. Previously he worked for Network Rail as head of systems integration and future railway systems engineer.

John Irwin, deputy project engineering director

Mr Irwin will report to engineering director Giles Thomas and was previously at Halcrow and CH2M.

Ralph Parkin, head of project engineering (Area South)

Mr Parkin is in charge of the engineering aspects of the delivery of the southern section of HS2 from Euston to the M25. He was previously regional business development and marketing manager for CH2M’s Asia Pacific Regional Leadership Team.

Martin Boath, head of project engineering (Central Area)

Mr Boath is responsible for engineering aspects of the delivery of the central area of HS2. He was previously head of infrastructure planning and integration at CH2M and worked on delivery of infrastructure for the Qatar World Cup.

David Hobson, head of project engineering (Area North)

Mr Hobson is overseeing engineering aspects of the delivery of HS2’s northern area. He was previously executive director of operations at Jacobs Engineering, working on projects such as Crossrail, Manchester Metrolink and the Doha Metro project in Qatar.

  • Maybe you could get the personal pronoun correct for the only woman so far appointed to the team. Apart from the gammar, this is once again a shocking indictment of the construction industry and another clear example of how it continues to fail on equality.
