Balfour Beatty has started redundancy proceedings for staff working on its Whitechapel Crossrail site, Construction News can exclusively reveal.
The contractor began the redundancy consultation process on Thursday last week, the day before news broke that Crossrail was to be delayed until autumn 2019, CN has learned.
CN understands the redundancies are unconnected to the delay to the £15.4bn line’s completion.
The measures affect directly employed staff working on the Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall and Vinci (BBMV) joint venture’s £110m C512 main station works contract.
Balfour Beatty confirmed to CN that it had begun HR1 proceedings, which means there must be more than 20 staff being let go.
Employers are legally bound to inform the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) if they are making a certain number of staff redundant within a 30-day or 45-day period.
A Balfour Beatty spokesperson said: “We have informed our directly employed workforce working on the BBMV Whitechapel project of our intention to start formal redundancy consultation.
“As the project approaches its completion, our operations will begin to wind down and site demobilisation will commence. We will now see a phased reduction of our workforce between October and December.
“We will work with our employees to redeploy as many individuals as possible across the Balfour Beatty group.”
Last week CN revealed that delays to the fit-out of Crossrail’s new central stations and tunnels were behind the delivery body’s decision to push back the opening date.
On Monday former National Infrastructure Commission boss Andrew Adonis criticised the government’s decision to move Sir Terry Morgan to HS2 from Crossrail.
