MIPIM: Kier suggests affordable housing rethink

A “complete rethink” of the way developers and contractors deliver affordable housing may be required in the UK, including an increased focus on the use of off-site solutions, the head of Kier’s affordable housing division has told delegates at MIPIM.

Dennis Seal, director of development and affordable housing at Kier Partnership Homes, told a seminar on city planning at the Cannes property conference this afternoon that there was the potential for a range of new methods to be used to deliver affordable housing.

He suggested the UK may need “a complete rethink of how we deliver affordable housing”.

Mr Seal added: “We don’t promote in this country a lot of build off site techniques. There is potential there.

“I do think we still have lessons to learn, and there could still be different ways of providing housing for people in need of benefits.”

Mr Seal said it would become ever more increasingly important for developers and contractors to “speak with Government to improve housing for the future”.
