Morgan Sindall has been chosen to build a £28m sports facility for Southampton Solent University.
The contractor has been picked to design and build the four-storey facility, which will include two sports halls, three fitness studios, gyms and teaching facilities.
Located on the university’s East Park Terrace Campus, the project has already started on site and is due to complete in summer 2019.
The steel-framed building has been designed to achieve a BREAAM Excellent rating.
It was won through the Southern Construction Framework, marking Morgan Sindall’s 11th win through the framework. The project team also includes ArchitecturePLB, Arup and JLL.
Southampton Solent University vice-chancellor Graham Baldwin said: “Starting work on the new sports building is great news for our students and staff, as well as our local community and the city.
“It forms the latest phase of our exciting, ongoing estates development and in addition to our sector leading Spark building, it’s a further physical manifestation of our commitment to excellence in learning and teaching.”
Morgan Sindall managing director for the South Andy Duff added: “This ambitious scheme will help the university enhance its sport, health and fitness-related degree programmes by providing specialist sport and fitness practical spaces.
“The new sports centre will create a real presence as people enter the East Park Terrace campus and we’re looking forward to delivering a great facility.”

The project is Morgan Sindall’s second major contract win in Southampton this year, after the contractor bagged a deal in April to deliver Select Property Group’s Vita Student development on Portswood Road in the city centre.
The scheme, which is due to complete next summer, will provide 435 student bedrooms, along with a 13,000 sq ft communal area which includes social space and a gym.
