Sir Robert McAlpine has scooped a contract for the £150m refurbishment of Nottingham Broadmarsh shopping centre.
The deal, worth over £91m, will see McAlpine demolish and rebuild large areas of the existing complex for client Intu.
Broadmarsh’s gross internal floorspace will more than halve from around 592,000 sq ft to 243,500 sq ft, with around 267,000 sq ft of internal floorspace set to be lost due to either change of use or demolition.
In May, Construction News revealed Laing O’Rourke and Bowmer & Kirkland were locking horns for the revamp of the shopping centre.
A month later, CN also revealed Sir Robert McAlpine had stepped into the bidding race for the job.
The refurbishment is expected to begin in December 2017, with the centre reopening in late 2019/early 2020 on a phased basis.
Alongside the proposals in Nottingham, Intu is also planning a multi-million-pound redevelopment of its Milton Keynes shopping centre.
Around 100,000 sq ft of space will be added to the centre, including a new dining quarter and cinema.
However, the scheme was called in back in late 2015 after opponents said the redevelopment conflicted with the Milton Keynes Neighbourhood Plan.
Concerns were raised over the public open space that would be built upon as part of the proposals.
However, communities secretary Sajid Javid gave the green light to the scheme 18 months after it was called in.
The DCLG inspector examining the plans said: “The proposed development would result in harm to the neighbouring listed shopping building but this would be less than substantial and, within that classification, at the lower end.
“The public benefits of the scheme would therefore outweigh this harm such that the setting of the listed building would be preserved.”
