Wates Group growth plan targets North-east expansion

Wates’ new North-east and Yorkshire director has been tasked with expanding the group’s reach in order to help it hit £2bn turnover.

Wates Construction’s business unit director in Yorkshire and the North-east, Paul Dodsworth, joined the company from Bowmer & Kirkland in April.

The contractor will focus on commercial, manufacturing and public sector markets in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, the Teeside and the Tyneside areas as part of its long-term growth plan.

The company said it was keen to add to its affordable housing division in the region – Wates Living Space in the North-east – which has been involved in new-build development and property maintenance for social landlords across Durham and Newcastle.

The expansion into the North-east will seek to build on Wates Group’s Yorkshire-based arm of the business, which has worked on schemes including the £100m Central Square office in Leeds and Haribo’s new £35m production facility in Wakefield.

The company is also in a preliminary agreement with York-based contractor Shepherd Group to take over its engineering services, as well as a significant number of contracts and frameworks.

He said: “Key to this is our support of our regional supply chain partners. We’re a contractor with a profound focus on local procurement and keeping our sub-contractors at the forefront of our business will allow us to ensure that our growth, their growth, and that of our industry, is sustainable.”
