Wates wins three student accommodation contracts with Select Property Group

Wates has scooped three contracts with a combined value of more than £130m with property developer Select Property Group.

The contractor will build student accommodation schemes for the developer’s Vita Student brand.

The largest contract is worth £60.2m, which is for the construction of a 748-bed student development on Oxford Road in Manchester.

Construction News revealed in March that Wates was the frontrunner for the job the Circle Square Manchester job, which will be built on a former BBC site.

A second contract worth £47.7m will see the firm build a 2.5 ha student village in York for the developer.

Fifteen buildings between three and four storeys high will be created and a former convent building will be refurbished as part of the deal.

The third contract, worth £23.8m, is for a 10-storey development consisting of 331 bedrooms in Newcastle near St James’ Park.

Two further Vita Student schemes are being developed in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Carillion recently reached completion on one of Vita’s Newcastle projects, worth £15.5m.

The contractor started work on the 259-room scheme in November 2014 and completed work last month.
