Willmott Dixon has been awarded a £12m contract to build a new community centre in Hebburn, South Tyneside.
The two-storey hub will include a 25 metre swimming pool and gym. It will also feature a library and IT centre, meeting rooms for community groups and a learning suite linked to South Tyneside College.
Willmott Dixon said it intends to support the economy in Hebburn by spending at least 30 per cent of its budget with local suppliers and sub-contractors, as well as creating apprenticeships for local residents.
The new centre aims to regenerate South Tyneside and attract investment from the private sector.
Willmott Dixon managing director in the North Anthony Dillon said: “We are excited about the Hebburn Community Hub project and looking forward to giving Hebburn town centre the landmark hub it deserves.”
The contractor has a local office in Gateshead and has delivered a number of community projects in the North East, including the Houghton-Le-Spring Primary Care & Leisure Centre in Sunderland.
It is also currently building a £30m new headquarters for Northumbria Police close to Newcastle Central Station.
