Atkins makes 200 extra redundancies despite strong Q4

Engineering consultancy Atkins has cut 200 more jobs from its global operation despite a recent strong performance, brinining the total cuts made since 1 October 2010 to 1,000.

In a pre-close trading update to the market for the year ended 31 March 2011, the group said it has “continued to adjust resources” and expected to end the year with a headcount of 17,500.

It follows a management statement made on 16 February 2011 which said the group would finish the year with a headcount of “around 17,700”.

As of 1 Ocotber 2010, the group had a total headcount of approximately 18,500.

But despite the job cuts the latest update strikes a bullish tone, citing upbeat overseas markets.

It said: “The group has traded well through the fourth quarter, in particular due to the performance of the Middle East business, and is now anticipating reporting results for the year ended 31 March 2011 ahead of current market expectations.”

The UK remains “challenging” according to the update but performance remains in line with expectations.

The announcement comes ahead of the group’s preliminary results, due on the 16 June 2011.
