John Sisk & Son has carried out a 160-tonne bridge lift this week over the River Lea in east London.
The Leamouth North Bridge was assembled onsite and lifted into place by a 1,200-tonne crane.
The vertical lifting bridge was raised by four hydraulic rams to allow large boats in the tidal River Lea to pass under it and through on to the adjacent River Thames.
The structural steel deck for the bridge was fabricated in three sections by John Sisk & Son’s steelwork contractor Thompson Steel at its factory in Carlow, Ireland.
The sections were then transported by road to site.
Similarly, the main arch chord defining the top of the bridge truss was fabricated in three sections with the individual truss members.
The steel sections were assembled and welded together on site to construct the bridge, which is pre-cambered to ensure the correct profile when placed on the steel abutment frames, erected on both sides of the river.
John Sisk & Son was appointed principal contractor by Ballymore Properties to carry out the design and construction of the bridge.
The bridge spans the River Lea between Canning Town station and Ballymore’s new City Island Development in the Docklands.
It will connect the development site, currently in the construction phase by Ballymore, to Canning Town and provide access for pedestrians and cyclists.
