John Sisk to restore fire-ravaged pier

John Sisk & Son has won a contract to rebuild the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare that was wrecked by a fire last year.

The deal will see Sisk restore the Grand Pier to its former glory over 46 weeks ready for opening next summer.

After the work, the Pier will again feature rides and attractions, along with a pavilion 60 per cent larger than before.

Structural work has already been started, by Commercial Marine & Piling, which has installed 70 piles.

Sisk Western Region director Les Nicholls said: “This project comes along once in a lifetime and it is made doubly special to see its restoration at the heart of everyone in the community.

“It is quite clear how devastated everyone was at the time of the fire and we will use our skills and expertise to bring the Grand Pier back in time for summer 2010.”
