Lights for lords

Abacus Lighting celebrated the end of a long journey last week when the permanent floodlights it built at Lord’s cricket ground were switched on for their first fixture

The four custom-designed floodlights can be extended to 48 m high when in use and retracted to just over 29 m when not in use.

With touch-screen operation, the lights take just 20 minutes to be fully extended for use from switch-on and provide a lighting level of 2,200 lux inside the ground. Out of season the headframes can be removed.

The head frame design of each floodlight mounts 100 Challenger 3 floodlights and cowls, with each 2kw day-light lamp producing 220,000 lumens to meet the lux standards necessary for HDTV broadcast.

In the match, last year’s finalists Kent beat last year’s winners Middlesex, winning by 62 runs.
