Brown, Benz and best practice: Q&A with award-winner Danny Lucas

Danny Lucas, managing director of Finishing and Fit Out Award winner S Lucas, on bad politicians, good cars and why investing in people is the best way forward.

Who would you most like to shoot with a paintball gun?

Gordon Brown – I never rated him as a chancellor or PM.

You’re God for the day. What’s the first thing you do?

Make all the litter disappear and clean up our country – a simple problem to deal with that would give every person and business a sense of pride.

Who is your hero?

Karl Benz for inventing the car – I loved Mercedes Benz cars as a kid and was inspired by Mr Benz for his vision, quality and the attention to detail.

What has been your worst business decision?

Deviating from what we do – I once launched a construction- related product idea with an established track record into the large retail sheds and couldn’t believe how much time and effort it took trying to sell it to time-wasting buyers who would happily see you earn nothing for your efforts.

And your best?

Realising that I should stick to what we have always done – a format that has proved successful but you don’t always realise is the reason for your success.

What characteristics do you most dislike in others?

Ignorance – followed by laziness, incompetence and dishonesty. If you’ve got one, you’ve normally got them all.

If you were blessed with the necessary talent, what would your dream job be?

Film producer – I was certain as a kid that I would be a film cameraman.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Always set yourself a target.

What should the construction industry be doing to help itself in  the current climate?

Publicise the downsides of going for the cheapest price – the best clients and contractors have the common sense to embrace partnerships, negotiating and single source procurement.

What’s the best work-related thing you did recently?

Holding a team workshop with my staff – without the people that do the work you’ve got nothing, so making sure everyone knows what is expected of them and giving feedback is key.

How would you like to be remembered?

For running a company that always gets the job done on time and to an unbeatable quality and safety standard.
