CNinsight100 Specialists: Piling

A notable exit from this year’s table of CNinsight 100 top piling contractors is Expanded Piling, part of the Expanded Group ultimately owned by Laing O’Rourke, which recorded a turnover of just £3.7m, a dramatic 77 per cent fall from the £16m the previous year.

Also out is Simplex Foundations after its acquisition by Bachy Soletanche in 2009. The deal was sealed for the top piling contractor’s owner to buy third place Roger Bullivant last month.

Little change has occurred in the rest of the table, but turnover gaps have contracted. Last year, Bachy Soletanche was £40m ahead of Roger Bullivant, but there is now £25m separating it from the new second highest contractor, Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering.

Revenue of more than £10m is no longer required to make the top 10. Reflecting other specialist sub-sectors, just one company in the table saw turnover grow. Miller Piling’s sales shot up by 64 per cent in 2010.
