The table of the top 50 firms by value of contract hauls, according to construction intelligence provider Glenigan, saw Kier take the summit with a £282.6m haul.

The Bedfordshire headquartered contractor sealed 18 deals over the festive period, led by a £135m contract for the Innovation Campus at Cardiff University.

Kier was confirmed as the preferred bidder for the project, which includes two new buildings and is set to start on site in early 2017.

Balfour Beatty was second for the month with £252m of wins over four contracts, chief among which was a £160m deal to build the Madison tower for LBS Properties.

The firm was awarded a preconstruction services contract for the 53-storey London’s Docklands building in January 2016 before signing the full award last month.

Morgan Sindall was third with 24 wins, representing December’s biggest haul by volume.
