The company secured a £263.1m haul to clinch the last of 2017’s monthly tables, which rank contractors by the value of deals signed in the period.

Among Kier’s wins for the month was a £50m housing project for Leicester City Council and a £20m industrial scheme in Bath for client Rotork, according to construction intelligence provider Glenigan.

The firm’s haul was among the lowest winning monthly totals of the year; however, its 38 deals marked the highest volume of wins of any table-topping contractor in 2017.

Bam took second for December with 10 contracts worth £240.5m – only its second podium of the calendar year – while Willmott Dixon was a distant third for the second month running on £177.4m across 10 projects.

Fifth-placed Mace sealed one of the biggest deals of the month: the £140m Paul Marshall Building development for the London School of Economics.

Other stand-out contracts in December included a £90m office project in London’s Circle Square for client Bruntwood, which single-handedly gave Sisk ninth place for the month, while McLaren took 15th having been confirmed on a retail-led development in Banbury.

In the annual contractor league, Sir Robert McAlpine increased the gap to Kier by nearly £150m to open up a substantial lead.

The battle for the podium positions has tightened, however, with Morgan Sindall leapfrogging Laing O’Rourke to take fourth and only £130m separating second from fifth for the 12 months to December.

Troubled contractor Carillion slipped two places into 10th, Wates climbed from 11th to ninth and VolkerWessels jumped six places into 15th.
