The contractor took over the £1bn deal after Bouygues announced it was exiting the scheme in March, fending off competition from rivals including Mace and Carillion in the process.

Battersea was one of five wins sealed by McAlpine during the month, giving it a total of £1.5bn and a first league win since July 2016, according to construction intelligence provider Glenigan.

The contractor also secured the £460m regeneration of Woking’s town centre, a deal finalised last month having been revealed in April.

Aecom made its top-10 debut in second place for May thanks to its deal to act as main contractor on the £800m Spire project, for which its contract is estimated at £420m.

Construction News revealed in April that the engineering giant was set to build the 67-storey tower near Canary Wharf for client Greenland Group. The contract is the firm’s biggest since first announcing its move into UK contracting in 2015.

Third place for May went to management contractor Blue Sky, which won a £150m hotel and cinema project in London’s Leicester Square.

Among the other stand-out deals signed during the month was a £70m contract for a link road in Worcester, awarded to Alun Griffiths.

In the annual league table Morgan Sindall remained top but saw its lead over Laing O’Rourke cut to just £28m.

Sir Robert McAlpine was the biggest mover, soaring to third for the year to May having been 18th for the year to April.

Kier, Galliford Try and Bam all dropped a place as a result, with Willmott Dixon losing two to sit eighth. Balfour Beatty meanwhile recovered some lost ground in the 12-month table, climbing from 19th to 16th.
