The firm finalised contracts for Landsec’s 21 Moorfields scheme (pictured) and Bluebutton’s 1-2 Broadgate, each of which have been valued at £250m by construction intelligence provider Glenigan.

These gave McAlpine its first league triumph since May 2017, when it secured phase three of Battersea Power Station.

Lendlease took second place in October with a single win: Mitsubishi Estate’s new £300m tower in central London. The contract was finalised last month, having been revealed by CN in September.

It marked Lendlease’s joint-highest showing in the monthly table, having also claimed second in November 2017.

Hill Partnerships was third for the month after bagging the lead role in the £300m regeneration of Aldershot and Farnborough town centres. The contractor’s previous best was sixth place in December 2013’s rankings.

October saw several other high-profile appointments: fourth-placed Mace finalised the £215m Marshgate I project for University College London; GMI was named on a £125m distribution facility for Follingsby Max in Gateshead; and McLaren clinched the £120m deal to deliver Leicester City FC’s new training ground.

In the annual table covering the year to October, Kier, Wates and Galliford Try held firm in the podium positions, despite Willmott Dixon surging from sixth to fourth.

Sir Robert McAlpine was the most high-profile mover, its recent deals sending the firm from 11th to fifth in the 12-month table.

Laing O’Rourke recovered lost ground to climb from 13th to seventh, Mace rose five places to ninth, and VolkerWessels gained six spots to re-enter the top 20.

There was less good news for Balfour Beatty, which fell from fourth to 10th as several large contracts slipped outside the period covered, while Bouygues UK was down four places to 14th.
