The list is based of firms describing themselves as construction companies under standard SIC coding. All figures are accurate to 1 September 2011.
Turnover figures are for group turnover, where applicable. The CNinsight 100 table is ranked by underlying group turnover, but this year an extra column has been included to display revenue including shares of joint ventures and associates, where appropriate.
Figures for specialist firms, consultants and housebuilders are reported separately. Where a number of UK-based firms are owned by a foreign parent, or where a UK holding company owns a number of subsidiaries, attempts have been made to combine the figures.
Figures are from combined results for Bouygues UK and Colas, both divisions of French parent Bouygues SA.
Eaga/Carillion Energy Services
Carillion completed its takeover of Eaga in April, and the firm has been rebranded Carillion Energy Services. For this CNinsight 100 the
companies have been reported separately because results are not yet consolidated into the Carillion plc accounts.
Leadbitter was bought by Bouygues from Heijmans at the end of last year. The company’s results are not consolidated at present.
Harsco Infrastructure Services
SGB’s name has changed to Harsco Infrastructure Services, following the decision by parent Harsco to rebrand all its acquisitions over the past few years under the Harsco banner.
Figures are for Miller Construction rather than the diverse Miller Group. Miller Construction also includes the group’s housebuilding activities.
Figures include Vinci plc, Taylor Woodrow and Eurovia, formerly Ringway. Vinci SA does not consolidate all its UK operations so its actual UK-based turnover may be higher than that detailed.
Sir Robert McAlpine
Figures are from Newarthill, the official name for Sir Robert McAlpine.
Keller is not included in the main top 100 table as the vast majority of its turnover is generated outside the UK. The contractor can be found in the concrete specialists table. In the 2010 financial year its £49.6m UK turnover represented just 5.7 per cent of the company’s total.
