BIM Project Excellence: Winner

Winner: Metek UK – Oval Quarter SW9

Amid a strong field of finalists, Metek’s adoption of building information modelling stood out thanks to its stubborn commitment to 3D and 4D working and successful application of the technology on a high-profile project.

That project is the Oval Quarter in London, a major residential development being overseen by Higgins Construction as part of the Regenter Consortium.

The second-largest PFI contract in Europe, the Oval Quarter comprises around 1,000 properties in Lambeth.

Metek was chosen to oversee the light steel frame element of the scheme.

The company used BIM to sequence the installation of each light and hot-rolled steel element, as well as prefabricated balconies and stairways.

All elements were modelled, with no exceptions.

Judges’ comment

BIM data generated at Metek’s office near Stroud was transferred to enable the production of frame construction drawings for its factory on a separate site 110 km away in Wolverhampton.

BIM allowed the firm to address spatial clashes before materials got to site, with collaboration and integration of the supply chain proving crucial to its success.

Accordingly, the company was able to execute the design and get onto site much quicker, with the first two-storey units at the Oval Quarter built in just seven days.

The judges were also impressed by Metek’s use of zone-specific colour-coded sections, which made it clear where each belonged and was made possible by BIM co-ordinated just-in-time delivery.

BIM proved equally critical to logistics planning on the project and was used to keep track of exactly how much material was needed on site.

This in turn helped reduce waste, producing a major saving and boosting profit margins.

Metek recorded zero RIDDORs in its work on the scheme, which it attributed in part to the BIM planning process.

More widely, the judges praised the company’s refusal to take on 2D projects, as well as its willingness to learn from mistakes, feed back and improve.

BIM has helped Metek to exploit this highly sustainable and cost-effective area of construction and the company looks well-placed to continue improving its processes through the use of the latest technology.
