British Power International, POC-MAST – a Permanent HV Connection Solution for Developers and Operators
The POC-MAST from British Power International is a new connection solution, developed following a review of connection market requirements and the traditional replacement tower used in distribution networks.
The concept provides a new way for developers to connect to 132 kV overhead lines in the UK.
Clients are now considering its use on a number of projects.
Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure & Construction (CSIC) – CSattAR Photogrammetric Monitoring
CSattAR is a digital image correlation system developed and installed by CSIC researchers.
It is specifically designed to monitor movements more cheaply and with higher accuracy and ease of installation than other systems – especially in tunnel environments.
Using normal off-the-shelf DSLR cameras, movements are tracked with sub-millimetre accuracy, providing low-cost monitoring with high levels of information using photogrammetric techniques.
A successful experiment was carried out last year in a Royal Mail tunnel under London.
Lafarge Tarmac – Low-temperature Asphalt
Lafarge Tarmac’s partnership with the Carbon Trust has seen it launch a new industrial efficiency specification for low-temperature asphalt to cut the carbon footprint of UK highways.
Following a three-year trial, Lafarge has helped lift the market barriers to the use of low-temperature asphalt.
The use of it could save £46.2m and around 260,000 tonnes of CO2 during the manufacturing of the material over the next 10 years if it achieves 21 per cent of the total UK asphalt market.
NG Bailey – Rare Energy
Rare Energy is an outsourced energy management solution for clients, developed and delivered by NG Bailey and powered by its US partner Elutions.
Put simply, it takes a client’s existing assets and ensures they are operated in real-time at their optimum level of energy efficiency.
But if savings are not delivered, the client gets its money back.
The risk-free approach led to Morrisons signing a five-year deal in 2014, with the system rolled out to all its stores and resulting in significant savings.
Strongduct – Strongduct Pre-insulated Galvanised Steel Duct System
The Strongduct system allows the transport of air with greater thermal efficiency, at higher pressure and at high velocity, reducing heat and energy loss from buildings.
Strongduct says the system is twice as fast to install as traditional ducting and insulation, and offers a 100 per cent vapour seal guarantee with manufacture taking place in a controlled factory environment.
The system also needs just one trade to install, saving time and money.
Utterberry – Wireless Sensors
Utterberry’s intelligent wireless sensors are among the smallest in the world and weigh only 15 g each, meaning an entire network can be carried and installed by one individual in one trip.
In April 2014, a network of 32 sensors was deployed in a tunnel at Crossrail’s Mile End station in London, measuring movement to sub-millimetre precision along with tunnel temperature and humidity.
The entire system weighed under 500 g and was installed by one person using nothing more than a 3 m pole.
The sensors have run continuously since then, using almost no power, providing immediate and accurate data to contractors.
Worthing Homes – Relish Smartwire
In 2014, Worthing Homes implemented its first pilot roll-out of Relish Smartwire, installed in 20 new-build homes.
The Smartwire is a power-down switch that works like a hotel swipe card near the front door of the home.
When used, it powers down all non-essential devices, including those on standby, while leaving essential appliances running, saving residents significant costs on their energy bills.
The switch forms part of Worthing’s Relish initiative – Residents 4 Low Impact Sustainable Homes.
