Equipment Supplier of the Year: Winner

Winner: Siltbuster

Siltbuster is making huge strides in helping industry firms tackle polluted wastewater that is generated during construction works, and last year introduced its remarkable EcoClear product.

When high-pressure water comes into contact with concrete during hydro-demolition, the PH level shoots up from a neutral 7 to a highly alkaline 12. If this toxic by-product is released into a watercourse, it can kill fish and damage local ecosystems.

Such pollution is usually either neutralised using acid, which can also be harmful, or is tankered offsite at significant cost.

Siltbuster’s EcoClear dispenses with both approaches and treats the alkaline water with its carbon dioxide adjustment technology, which makes the water safe to be poured down the drain or transferred to the watercourse.

The company has also developed bespoke treatment solutions for clients, such as the iHB20R system that was created for the Laing O’Rourke Ferrovial Agroman JV working on the Northern line extension. The system not only removes solids generated during tunnelling and groundworks from water, but also adjusts its PH levels.

“Siltbuster is a national gem in the making. It is a business that is, in one sense, an equipment supplier but takes industry know-how to a level of product development that deserves a world stage”

Judges’ comment

While it is perhaps unsurprising that a company in Siltbuster’s line of work has a strong focus on the environment and sustainability, the firm demonstrated to the judges how every piece of its equipment “satisfies a green agenda”.

Recognising that it is a contractor’s operatives who are the ones that actually use its products to treat water, Siltbuster realised it needed to train them to understand what they were dealing with. To this end, it runs a free training programme for use of its equipment, which in 2017 saw 900 workers from 40 companies around the UK go through its programme.

As well as benefiting major UK projects such as the Northern line extension, Hinkley Point C and Thames Tideway, the company’s innovative systems have also been used in France on the €23bn Grand Paris Express rail expansion and in Qatar on the Doha Metro.

In response to this success, Siltbuster is investing in its future, expanding its fleet of more than 400 treatment units and investing £4.3m in a new manufacturing facility, which it plans to establish as a “global centre of excellence” for water treatment.

The judges were highly impressed with Siltbuster and hailed the firm as an “ambassador of British ingenuity”.
