Established in 2004 and based in Bracknell, Berkshire, PiLON is a building and refurbishment specialist which employs more than 400 people and has an annual turnover of £20 million.
Last year saw the company enter the private housing market for the first time and expand geographically in the Midlands and North of England.
Strong commitment to training and developing staff
The judges were impressed with the company’s array of projects and its commitment to training and development that provides a career path for its team.
PiLON has an excellent recruitment and training strategy where staff training needs are assessed prior to them joining the company and every employee receives a personal training programme when they start. The company also recently redesigned its Management Academy programme to align more closely with the Institute of Leadership & Management’s Level 5 qualifications.
KPIs used to secure top customer satisfaction
The company prides itself on working as a partner with its clients and nurturing long-term, mutually beneficial relationships. Honest communication and shared goals, it says, have ensured a continuous workload with a high proportion of regular clients.
It uses key performance indicators to measure the company’s abilities in areas such as health and safety, quality of workmanship, teamwork and communication, finance, and completion on time.

The past year has seen the company focus on establishing capability in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Current contracts already include installation of internal and external insulation and photovoltaics. Developing an understanding of current environmental legislation is also seen as an important service provided to clients.
The company achieves 96 per cent customer satisfaction in monthly customer surveys. Its keenness to be demonstrably more efficient has led to the development of computer software which holds real-time information about company projects, enabling reports to be produced more swiftly.
Flexible approach to projects
Recent work in London’s Bounds Green area has involved extensive refurbishment of 63 properties.
As soon as the contractor started removing old and worn out features in the homes, it quickly realised that there were some serious structural issues which needed to be addressed. These included dry rot, damp, un-bonded brick walls and insufficient bearing of first floor chimney breasts and walls.
The main contractor and client took on board PiLON’s concerns and developed a revised schedule of works.
PiLON took on the necessary work, including making sure it was checked and approved by building control officers and ensuring full compliance with Building Regulations.
