Winner: Cleveland Bridge – Newport Bridge
The need for early contractor involvement and collaboration on projects was exemplified by Network Rail and Cleveland Bridge’s work on Newport Bridge.
As part of the crucial overhead line electrification work on the Great Western Main Line, Cleveland Bridge took on the replacement of an iconic road bridge in Newport, south Wales.
To accommodate the increased height of the overhead line electrification, Cleveland was contracted to plan and supervise heavy lift removal of the existing bridge structure under strict timeframe restraints.
As well as the bridge removal, the company had to install precast concrete deck units for the replacement within one 54-hour abnormal possession of the line.
The bridge sits on the boundaries of Newport station and connects the northern suburbs with the city centre. It is surrounded by businesses and residential homes, so the team was under pressure to reopen roads within the stipulated timeframe.

Working for ABC Electrification, Cleveland Bridge completed the bridge removal and replacement on time, under the scrutiny of local residents and media, as well as the wider project team.
To remove the existing bridge, Cleveland fitted it with additional steelwork, strengthening the structure for its removal by a 600-tonne-capacity crawler crane.
The old bridge was dismantled for recycling in the temporary works area at the same time as a 228-tonne, 50 m steel road bridge was installed.
Having been successfully fabricated and assembled offsite in Darlington, the precast units were transferred to Newport via trailer. The new bridge was assembled prior to installation in a trackside temporary works compound, adjacent to the railway station.
The new bridge was successfully completed within three hours of receiving confirmation of the line’s closure. This provided sufficient time for follow-on activities including installation of 90 precast concrete units before the line was reopened.
Cleveland Bridge won plaudits for its role in a collaborative team effort, which Peter Richardson of Arup Structures hailed as an “impressive and professional team effort with everything going to plan, including the behaviour of the bridge”.
Judges said the short timeframe for removal and installation meant this project could not have been completed without early contractor involvement and collaboration.
The new bridge is a significant improvement on its predecessor, able to accommodate heavier vehicles from city centre traffic, with a wider footpath and improved road alignment.
