Careys Civil Engineering – V&A Museum of Design, Dundee

Bam Construct’s work on Dundee’s new V&A Museum of Design saw it bring in Careys Civil Engineering to carry out extensive substructure and superstructure works, using bespoke formwork to create the complex shapes of the external walls.

Careys underlined its commitment to health and safety by giving workers extensive additional training due to the high proportion of work at height required on this project. Sustainability was a clear focus too, with cement conservation efforts helping lower energy use and carbon emissions during the manufacturing process.

Cleveland Bridge – London Bridge

As part of the mammoth redevelopment of London Bridge station, Costain appointed Cleveland Bridge for the supply, fabrication and installation of 29 plate girder rail bridge decks, made up of six main girders braced together. The structures involved weighed a total of 3,600 tonnes, and the city centre location gave rise to extremely complex logistics that required exhaustive co-ordination.

Cleveland Bridge delivered a high volume of offsite work to reduce the onsite programme, while significant parts of its work were limited to night possession shifts and demanded road closures.  With the station operational throughout the project, health and safety was especially crucial and extensively assessed.

The Coleman Group – Waterloo International Terminal

Coleman took on the demolition for Network Rail’s £600m regeneration of Waterloo’s international terminal. Over a 15-month programme the specialist delivered partial demolition of the existing structure as well as structural alterations, temporary works design, service strip-out and waste disposal at the disused Eurostar facilities.

Its work saw Coleman remove 2,000 tonnes of concrete from above the station’s London Underground station – 100 per cent of which was recycled. Despite challenging site restrictions on the UK’s busiest train station, the package was completed on time with zero RIDDORS.

DSM Demolition – Tottenham Hotspur White Hart Lane demolition

Mace’s project to build Tottenham Hotspur a new 61,000-seater stadium involves an extremely tight programme. As demolition contractor for the old stadium, DSM had to deliver within an exacting timeframe to clear the way for follow-on trades.

Taking out the old pitch was among the exceptional challenges on the scheme, with DSM having to programme and sequence the removal of 40,000 cu m of material in line with the demolition of the main superstructure due to the time constraints.

DSM nevertheless completed work on time, in budget and with a strong health and safety record.

Erith Contractors – Hanover Square

Crossrail is transforming the Hanover Square site in the West End of London into a new ticket hall, which is being created alongside a £500m 8,000 sq m retail, office and residential development. Erith Contractors’ package involved the demolition of 12 properties to accommodate the new development, as well as retaining eight historical facades.

The specialist had to remove 1.5 tonnes of asbestos across the development, while protecting surrounding Crossrail services. Erith also devised a variety of cost-efficient solutions, which it says resulted in savings of around £80,000 for the client.

Lee Marley Brickwork – South Gardens, Elephant Park

A new residential development in south-east London saw Lee Marley Brickwork deliver a facade package covering brick, block, stone, insulation, masonry support and scaffolding.

LMB showed commitment to modern methods of construction, producing 3,000 stone items, 1,900 brick-clad lintels and soffits, and more than £500,000-worth of masonry support and secondary steel off site, before delivering them on a just-in-time basis. The firm’s scaffold works meanwhile involved 11 plots ranging from a terrace of two-storey townhouses through to a 16-storey block.

LMB exceeded its client targets on local labour and apprenticeships, which it says has brought in new employees that will support the company’s future growth.

SES Engineering Services – Queensferry Crossing

Scotland’s £1.35bn Queensferry Crossing marked the first bridge services project SES had worked on, with the firm tasked with installing M&E within the bridge’s 110,000-tonne cable-stayed deck sections.

SES took the opportunity to showcase its use of offsite methods, with each section completed onshore before being transported by barge onto the River Forth then craned to connect between the bridge towers. This offsite engineering approach reduced the need for working at height and saved more than 25,000 worker-hours, the company says.

Severfield UK – Coal Drops, King’s Cross

Bam Construct brought in Severfield to renovate a retail and dining development within Argent’s King’s Cross site, while retaining features across various Victorian structures.

The firm’s main challenge was the roof connecting the two buildings on the site, which involved two 50-tonne kissing nodes supporting a ribbon truss roof, as well as a suspended walkway hung from the bottom of the roof.

Severfield engaged early with Bam and was able to influence the design, with a focus on the roof’s complex geometry. Dealing with dilapidated Victorian structures threw up various challenges, but the team completed the project successfully with a clean health and safety record.
