Winner: SES Engineering Services – Queensferry Crossing

For the Queensferry Crossing, the biggest infrastructure project in Scottish history, SES identified very early on that this behemoth would require two advanced construction approaches.

Firstly, the company explained that the quantity of services and 37,000 km of cabling meant the job could not have been delivered without BIM.

Although the client did not initially recognise the value of BIM, SES changed this perception by supplying it with an as-built model.

But equally important was the need for offsite manufacturing, without which the scheme would have faced a far longer delivery programme.

To keep the job on track, SES produced ‘Prism’ services modules that benefited from a high degree of pre-assembly, with the first, second and third fix all completed before they arrived at the site.

Conducting the first fix offsite alone saved 25,000 working hours, SES says, quite aside from the health and safety gains of reduced work at height – a major factor in the team’s zero RIDDORs.

Judges’ comment

Getting the modules produced in the first place was no mean feat either and saw SES work with its supply chain to produce unconventional 7 m containment units complete with luminaries and cleansing water pipework.

The exhaustive planning and offsite work meant the modules were simple to install once they got to site.

While at the start of the project SES was installing one module per day, by the end this rate had dramatically increased to one every three hours.

The judges were impressed with how the M&E firm had elevated its status on the job by proving its worth. Once it had been convinced of the value of Prism, the client had quickly bought into the concept to the extent it was reordering other processes around the SES team’s work.

All of this was coupled with the fact that bridges did not represent familiar territory for the subcontractor. Traditionally focused on jobs such as schools and hospitals, SES took something of a leap into the unknown on the colossal bridge, but one in which it had identified the “perfect opportunity” for its offsite capability.

If repeat business can be considered the ultimate client testimonial, then SES has a happy customer in Morrison Construction, which has awarded it four further jobs on the back of its work on the Queensferry Crossing.
