Winner: SPV Group
SPV Group is a relatively small company that impressed the judges with the progress it has made over the past 12 months.
Established in 2001, the firm has 100 full-time employees spread across a range of disciplines including cladding, glazing and concrete repairs. This spectrum of expertise enables the firm to provide the whole package to its clients, from cladding to glazing, and scaffolding to curtain walling.
Its growing reputation is highlighted by the fact that 80 per cent of the firm’s work is repeat business and its most recent set of financial results reported turnover of £10m, up from £8m during the previous period.
Diversity and skills are crucial to the company. Its commercial director Kate Whatley was appointed as vice-chair of the Women in Roofing group early last year, and Ms Whatley has since agreed a union that brings the WiR group under the wider Institute of Roofing organisation.
With the skills shortage dominating the industry’s agenda in recent years, SPV is actively engaging in campaigns, case studies and training initiatives to showcase and celebrate the industry for the next generation.
Since noting its ageing workforce a few years back, the firm has been looking to attract and nurture young talent, recruiting a number of apprentices.
Today, 22.5 per cent of its workforce is aged between 16-25, with 25 per cent aged between 26 and 36.

Client satisfaction remains key to SPV’s continued growth, and the group has worked with a number of high-profile clients such as Odeon, Holiday Inn, Bosch and British Aerospace. It is also the preferred cladding and roofing company for Lidl UK.
A standout project for the group was Albany House in Birmingham, where the company undertook a £1.6m refurbishment job on the 10-storey commercial building. SPV was tasked with turning a derelict, 1960s concrete structure into a contemporary office building.
In a bid to drive engagement, the SPV has placed an emphasis on social responsibility and community. Last year, the firm assisted a local dogs home by re-covering its existing roof structure for free. It also provided free storage space for the Royal British Legion to store and distribute poppies, and helped raise money for a number of charities including MacMillan and Crash.
The firm’s progress is exemplified by its liquid division, which grew significantly in 2016 and required the recruitment of 12 more team members to support the division’s growth.
Company culture and staff satisfaction is an important asset, one SPV has managed to champion alongside its various strengths.
The judges were left in no doubt that they had found a deserving winner.

CA Roofing Services was undoubtedly a close second in a tightly contested category.
The judges were really impressed by the innovation, quality of products and overall integration on show.
They also liked CA’s professionalism, demonstrated by its strong client base – including business with Amazon, BMW and Warner Brothers – and project list, such as the £50m Rushden Lakes scheme, a retail, leisure and tourism destination in the Nene Valley.
Another highlight was the group’s Employee Benefit Trust, a scheme that provides every one of its 220 employees with a stake in the company.
