Roofing Specialist of the Year: Winner

Winner: David Jameson Roofing Services

A conscientious approach to employee welfare and a clear commitment to client satisfaction convinced the judging panel to name David Jameson this year’s Roofing Specialist of the Year.

A second-generation family business based in Portadown, Northern Ireland, David Jameson has been operating for more than 30 years and benefits from a high number of long-serving staff, with a third of its 69 employees having been with the company for more than 10 years.

The judges were particularly impressed by how senior leaders within the company engage with their workforce every single day, leading from the front on sites and forming close relationships from top to bottom.

In a market where the wider available workforce is less diverse than many areas of the UK, the firm has also demonstrated a proactive commitment to improving the diversity of its talent pool.

David Jameson tackles jobs across the board in its sector, working on felt, PVC, rubber, liquid plastics and cladding, as well as undertaking joinery refurbishments and asbestos removal.

In 2017 it delivered more than 3,800 response tasks, as well as 2,200 planned maintenance tasks, system cleans and minor repairs.

“David Jameson demonstrated a strong family ethos, looking after its workforce with a caring approach while embracing diversity”

Judges’ comment

It has established strong relationships with public sector clients, and is the principal roofing contractor for the Education Authority of Northern Ireland, among others.

Among its notable projects in the past 12 months is the Castle Building on the Stormont Estate, known for its use in the Good Friday Agreement negotiations two decades ago.

The firm’s work covered 5,000 sq m and involved an inverted roofing system, with the team also having to overcome significant logistical issues due to many of its operations only being possible on weekends.

The recent political difficulties following the collapse of Northern Ireland’s power-sharing executive has prompted David Jameson to diversify its operations, preventing any over-reliance on public sector jobs and proactively targeting work in the Republic of Ireland to ensure growth.

Strong customer service is clearly central to the company’s approach and was reflected in its efforts following a major storm last December. In the space of just 24 hours the firm received 72 emergency callouts to tackle storm damage, yet attended 86 per cent of those calls within its designated response time.

Judges also praised its focus on sustainability, with 2017 seeing David Jameson attain Environmental BS8555 Level 6 – confirmed by the assessor as the first company in the world to achieve this new level.

Its strong family ethos coupled with excellent project and service delivery makes David Jameson a stand-out specialist in this competitive market.
