Special Award: Winner

Winner: FK Group

It’s been a good year for FK Group.

This building envelope specialist, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2014, grew its turnover significantly while diversifying into new markets - all while maintaining the ethos of a family-owned business that cares for its customers and employees.

Recognising the outstanding achievement of the company over the past 12 months, our judges nominated FK Group for this year’s Special Award, describing the company as having “really gone the extra mile” this year.

The firm’s numbers reflect its success: turnover rose from £30.1m to £40.2m in the year to 31 March 2014, up 33 per cent year on year, with profits rising 17.1 per cent.

FK Group diversified through the introduction of a specialist glazed façades offering, which the firm introduced in late 2013 to enable it to offer a full envelope service.

“FK Group has really gone the extra mile and deserves to win this year’s Special Award”

Judges’ comment

Turnover is forecast to continue growing, due largely to the rapid growth of this new façades division.

Project highlights included work carried out on the Manchester City FC Academy, the Turnmill Building in London and the City Council HQ in Stoke-on-Trent.

FK Group also undertook an impressive job to help build a new distribution centre for Waitrose (pictured).

The specialist worked closely with its supply chain partners to carry out extensive airtightness testing at preconstruction stage, improving the efficiency of the building and ensuring its lifespan was much longer.

As a result, it’s estimated that the client will save approximately £7,400 in operational costs each year, with an annual CO2 saving of 39,000 kg.

FK Group is still family-owned, with caring for its staff clearly at the heart of the business.

The firm has invested £420,000 in health and safety training in the past 12 months, equivalent to 20,800 hours.

It also runs CPD sessions every Friday, inviting all staff to attend an hour’s showcase on technical innovation within the business.

To cap off a successful anniversary year, the company opened a new head office in Altrincham, as well as its third office in Doncaster.

Our judges were impressed with FK Group’s “clear strategy” to secure growth in a challenging market, along with its “exceptional” workforce culture, helping the firm stand out from the crowd to win this year’s Special Award.
