Specialist Contractor of the Year (turnover up to £25m): Winner

Winner: Speedclad

Strong financial performance, commitment to staff wellbeing and client satisfaction saw Speedclad recognised as a continually improving specialist contractor at the top of its game.

The company, established just eight years ago, has a vision to be the “go-to contractor for total façade solutions” as well as “a company that people aspire to work for, and with”.

The judges agreed that Speedclad showed evidence of improvement during 2015 in all aspects of business performance. As well as boosting turnover by 50 per cent and profit by a quarter, Speedclad has targeted growth in 2016 that will see it become a £14m turnover firm – double its size just two years ago.

In 2015, as well as completing its largest project to date with Balfour Beatty, the specialist added new contractors including McLaughlin & Harvey and Robertson to its list of customers.

The contractor has sought to win work by exceeding client expectations and is now bringing in almost three-quarters of its revenue through repeat business, backed by an outstanding safety record that has seen its accident frequency rate maintained at zero for the last four years.

“Speedclad had a truly impressive year, showing a demonstrable commitment to its staff and strong evidence that it is trusted by numerous clients to complete outstanding projects through a partnership approach”

Judges’ comment

Going the extra mile for clients has included travelling abroad to Portugal and the US to source and review materials and plan logistics, efforts which contributed to improved environmental performance on major projects.

Recognising a strong year of growth, Speedclad opened a new Midlands regional unit in 2015, brought in seven new staff and has invested heavily in training as well as R&D through its 2,500 sq m facility in Yorkshire.

This was a difficult category for judges to decide on a winner, with one commenting that they would “be happy to work with every single one” of the finalists. However, all the judges agreed that they would have confidence bringing Speedclad onto one of their own projects.

This was reflected in testimonials from Wates and Bam Construction managers, who hailed Speedclad’s “level of care, commitment, pride and passion from the highest level of management and permeating through to all levels”, while praising the company’s “genuine pride in what they do and delivering a real commitment to delivering a successful outcome for all” on major projects in Leeds and Birmingham.
