Colas Rail: High Speed Careers

Developing people is a key focus at Colas Rail and 25 per cent of its leaders came from its Future Leaders Programme.

Graduates embark on a two-year course starting each September, which rotates graduates nationally and internationally, allowing for travel all over the world. Candidates are able to develop quickly in meaningful roles while making an important contribution to the business, with the scheme supported strongly at board level.

ISG: Developing Talent, Delivering Futures

ISG sought to improve the calibre of graduate entrants to the business and attract the best talent possible prior to launching its 2015 graduate recruitment campaign.

The firm researched the universities offering the best courses in built environment subjects, then sent campus ambassadors to each university to raise awareness of ISG and its graduate programme. The scheme has been a huge success, with graduates reporting positive feedback on their experiences and existing staff praising the calibre of candidates.

Mace: Diversity and Undergraduate Success

Mace’s 2017 graduate intake target of 75 was its biggest ever. In particular, since 2014 the contractor has worked to improve the gender balance of its intake.

In 2013, 22 per cent of the company’s graduate recruits were female, but by 2016 this had risen to 40 per cent – well above the industry average of 29.8 per cent.

Retention of graduates overall has also improved, reaching 92 per cent among those who are completing the programme this year.

Multiplex: Do Different

Multiplex works hard to ensure its graduates have a positive experience and strong level of autonomy, resulting in only two graduates leaving the business over the last five years – a retention rate of 98 per cent.

The best graduates are well rewarded with time and support, and given a chance to influence the business at a national or international level.

The company’s future talent committee, comprised of members of staff from all levels of the organisation, also works to continuously improve its recruitment processes.

Peter Brett Associates: PBA Graduate Development Programme

Graduates make up nearly 11 per cent of Peter Brett Associates’ workforce. Last year the company launched a successful graduate video, inviting graduates from across the country to come its Reading office and share their experiences of PBA.

This video was then used to raise awareness of the programme and resulted in a significant increase in the number of applicants.

Skanska UK: One Skanska Graduate Development Programme

Skanska takes between 75 and 100 graduates into the UK business each year – largely into its engineering, commercial and operations functions, but also in areas like finance and HR.

In 2015 the contractor launched a new programme designed to provide a common experience for graduates regardless of their specialism or the area of the business they join.

This has ensured candidates get a broad overview of the organisation, while also helping them build their peer network and gain a greater understanding of the how the business operates.
