Best Residential Developer: Winner

Winner: Galliford Try Partnerships

Galliford Try Partnerships scooped this award having performed strongly across all areas of best practice, particularly diversity and sustainability.

The company has worked closely with a range of partners such as local authorities, and formed 12 joint ventures with registered providers nationwide to deliver new homes.

Last year the business completed 594 mixed-tenure homes and recorded a 22 per cent increase in profit compared with 2016.

Galliford Try Partnerships scooped three major contracts in 2017: a £155m deal for 605 new homes at the Old Oak Common regeneration site; a £275m agreement with Ealing Council for a residential-led scheme; and a £100m contract alongside Trafford Housing Trust Developments to build 600 homes in Greater Manchester.

Judges commended its “excellent work” to address the skills shortage, with the firm having collaborated with the Working Skills Training Academy to create the Galliford Try Partnerships Skills Academy.

Since launching in February 2017, the initiative has been rolled out across the South-west to encourage the long-term unemployed back into work by offering work placements, full-time roles and apprenticeships.

Those who enrol on the course are given training on a live construction site, and get the opportunity to go on site visits and receive careers advice.

Learners are based in an onsite classroom studying construction theory and completing practical demonstrations, before spending time with Galliford Try Partnerships’ subcontractors to further develop their practical skills.

Three people have gained full-time employment as a result of the scheme to date, with 120 site visits carried out and 27 work placements offered.

“Galliford Try Partnerships is doing excellent work to address the skills shortage and improve mental health in the industry”

Judges’ comment

In addition, judges described the diversity of Galliford Try Partnerships’ workforce as “very positive”, as it looks to encourage more women and ethnic minorities into the business. Women make up 33 per cent of the company’s workforce, well above the industry average.

The judges noted the firm’s ambitious national growth plans as it aims to increase its turnover from £306m to £650m by 2021.

Its approach to health and safety was also robust, with the panel singling out the firm’s commitment to improving wellbeing across its workforce through its involvement with mental health initiative Mates in Mind.

This, combined with other initiatives, demonstrated a business creating a strong culture of nurturing and developing its staff.

Galliford Try Partnerships pipped its rival finalists to be named Best Residential Developer thanks to its efforts to not only improve every aspect of its business but also futureproof the industry.

Highly commended: Hub

Judges were impressed by Hub’s clear and effective strategy of delivering considerate homes in London while also improving its social engagement.

Hub’s approach to collaboration with communities while planning new homes in local areas was very strong, providing the developer with a grassroots understanding of housing needs in these areas.

In particular, judges commended the developer’s decision to install a low-carbon heating system on its Hoola development in London, despite the difficulty of doing so in built-up urban areas.
